Why you need to switch to Natural Hairspray
Although hairspray isn’t as terrible for you today as it was in the 1940s, many hairsprays still contain very harmful ingredients. It is highly likely that if you have hairspray in your home, it will contain many nasty ingredients that will not only have terrible effects on your lungs but will probably not being doing a great deal for your hair either. So, now’s the time to throw away all those old hairsprays and switch to a natural spray instead!
Ingredients such as artificial fragrances, benzyl salicylate, formaldehyde, propylene glycol, and propellants are many of the nasties that you can avoid by switching to natural haircare. However, it’s important to know the big deal about these ingredients, before we get started on which hairsprays to purchase instead.
Many non-natural hairsprays contain a bunch of ingredients labelled as simply ‘fragrance’. When these fragrances are artificial, they are often very hazardous. This is because it is impossible to determine what these fragrances truly are, as there could be hundreds of undisclosed ingredients that go into this so-called ‘fragrance’.
Very commonly associated with allergies and dermatitis, benzyl salicylate is present in nearly every hairspray at pharmacies and supermarkets. Often functioning as a fragrance additive, this ingredient is often unnecessary and could cause more harm than good. If you find that you are having an allergic reaction after using hairspray, benzyl salicylate could be the cause.
We’ve talked about formaldehyde and its use in nail polish before. Although this ingredient is naturally occurring, frequent exposure to formaldehyde can cause irritation to the nose and throat. Formaldehyde can also cause asthma and nausea and is a possible carcinogen.
Propylene glycol is a petroleum-based liquid that has been recognised as safe. However, many people are still rightly cautious about going anywhere near this ingredient. Many studies have shown that this chemical is terrible for your lungs and has even been linked to heart disease.
If you buy aerosol hairspray, chances are it will contain a propellant. The propellant is a liquified gas that forces the hairspray out of the can. In the mid-1990s, the Australian government banned certain propellants, such as CFCs, due to their detrimental effects on the environment. Hairspray today still uses propellants such as isobutane as an alternative to CFCs. Although very useful, propellants such as isobutane can be extremely irritating for the throat and lungs and can cause dizziness and skin reactions. If you find yourself feeling short of breath and dizzy when using hairspray, switch to a natural, non-aerosol spray as soon as possible.
According to medlineplus.org, there are many more harmful ingredients in hairspray, including carboxymethylcellulose, denatured alcohol, hydrofluorocarbon, polyvinyl alcohol, propylene glycol, and polyvinylpyrrolidone. So, always read the label and make sure that what you are putting on your hair and spraying in your bathroom is not harming you and your family.
