Finding a Cleanser that is safe for your Skin
If there is one product you need to be really careful about choosing, it is your facial cleanser. So many face washes are packed with unnecessary and harsh ingredients that do more for the longevity of the product than for the health of your skin. When choosing a cleanser (and as we will continue to reiterate) it is crucial to read and understand the product label.
One of the most common and most harmful ingredients in facial cleansers is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). This ingredient is usually what leaves your skin feeling just that little bit too squeaky clean. If you have a foaming cleanser, SLS could also be the agent that causes this foaming effect as well. While SLS is deemed safe to use, it can be highly irritating to the skin, especially if you already have sensitive skin. A greater concern, however, is that SLS works to strip the epidermis, causing all kinds of imbalances and irritations. It can sometimes be very hard to restore your skins’ acid mantle and natural pH balance once this damage has occurred.
Fragrances in cleansers can cause similar levels of irritation. As there is no need to include artificial and synthetic fragrances in skincare products, we will never understand why brands continue to do so – especially in face wash! When you see the ingredient, ‘fragrance’ on an ingredients list, this more often than not consists of phthalates and chemicals that can cause irritation and allergic reactions. The great news is, natural and organic face washes smell great anyway! However, if you are looking for a specific scent in your cleanser, search for products with natural fragrances instead.
Parabens are just as commonly seen in face washes as SLS and fragrances and are just as harmful. Included in many beauty products as preservatives to prolong the life of products, parabens do nothing for your skin. That is, aside from irritating your skin and possibly disrupting your endocrine system. Click here to read a list of parabens to avoid in facial cleansers.
The Environmental Working Group also recommends avoiding triclosan, triclocarban, and PEGs that are commonly found in skincare products. These ingredients are toxic not only to people, but to the environment as well.

HOW TO CHOOSE A FACE WASH THAT WORKS FOR YOU
There are a few ways to shop when choosing a new cleanser. Firstly, it’s important to determine what needs and values are important to you. For some products, being natural can simply be enough. However, with other products, you may feel that you’d rather the ingredients be certified organic. While all our cleansers are natural and toxin-free, to be certified organic they must contain ingredients that have been reviewed by a regulating body such as Australian Certified Organic. For further explanation, read our blog post about the difference between natural, organic, and certified organic products here.
Lucky for everyone, all cleansers listed in this blog post are vegan and cruelty-free! However, not all are made in Australia and not all are gluten-free. See our list of values below to find out which cleansers align with your values and needs.

However, if you have oily and combination skin, choose Sanctum Purifying Foam Cleanser, Botani Purify Facial Cleanser, or Black Chicken Remedies Cleanse My Face. For those with normal to dry skin, Acure Facial Cleansing Creme and Black Chicken Remedies Cleanse My Face will work best, and those with highly sensitive will benefit most from Andalou Naturals Cleansing Foam.
