Organic Toothpaste and the effects of Fluoride

We are all fairly certain by now that fluoride does a great job at helping to prevent cavities from forming. However, there has been substantial evidence over the years to suggest fluoride is harmful to our bodies, causing dental fluorosis, hypothyroidism, infertility, and issues with neurodevelopment in children. If you’ve concluded that the risks of using fluoride toothpaste far outweigh the benefits, then you’re probably looking for ways to maintain your oral health and keep those cavities away!

Cavities, tiny holes in the surface of your teeth due to damage and tooth decay can be caused by a variety of factors. Predominantly, bacteria in your mouth, along with consuming a lot of sugar and not effectively cleaning your teeth are the main causes of tooth decay. Mayo Clinic also lists a lack of fluoride as a reason people can develop cavities.
The best thing to do if you want to go fluoride free, is to look for ingredients in natural toothpastes that prevent cavities. Common anti-cavity ingredients include:
Xylitol – this magical ingredient is found in our Kiss My Face and Jack N’ Jill toothpastes. Basically, xylitol is a naturally occurring ingredient that works to create a protective layer over your teeth. This layer prevents bacteria in plaque from attaching to your teeth, preventing cavities and allow teeth to remineralise.  This helpful article explains how although fluoride helps teeth heal once they have been damaged, xylitol prevents the damage in the first place.
Green Tea Extract – As another great ingredient to look for, green tea extract fights bacteria in the mouth, preventing cavities as well as bad breath.
Tea Tree Oil – Tea tree oil is naturally antibacterial and is found in our Desert EssenceMy Magic Mudand Kiss My Face .toothpastes. The oil kills plaque extremely effectively and acts as a great method to prevent cavities, decay, and other oral issues such as gum disease
Citric Acid – In all Jack N’ Jill toothpastes, citric acid is shown to reduce tartar on teeth, also preventing cavities in the long run.
Sodium Bicarbonate – An ingredient in Weleda’s popular salt toothpaste, sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda) has many talents. The ingredient not only fights plaque but it also whitens teeth and removes stains!
All our fluoride-free toothpastes are a great way to prevent cavities without fluoride, as they contain ingredients that not only provide an alternative to fluoride but may even work better to protect your teeth.
Some researchers have found that taking supplements, such as Vitamin D, also help to maintain strong, healthy teeth. While brushing regularly and making small changes in your diet can help, many people have found that oil pulling can assist with reversing and healing cavities.
